New to Auctions?
Here are some suggestions for those just learning about auctions:
- Register for a bidder number: You can obtain a number at the reception desk. You must have a bidder number to bid, so make sure to get one when you come in before the auction or during preview.
- Preview our auction: Take a walk through our auction house during the preview times and get familiar with the items up for auction. This is a great opportunity to talk to the Harlowe-Powell staff and gather more information on the items you’ll be bidding on. You can take a “hands on” tour of the gallery and see everything first hand. During this time you can also ask the auctioneers and appraisal staff to help you with condition reports and queries you may have on any given piece.
- For Catalogued Auctions you can buy a catalog: Our catalogs are moderately priced and give you in-depth descriptions and pictures for all the items you’ll be bidding on. In the catalog you can expect to see information such as auction estimates, any noticeable damages, dimensions, and any found research or provenance. We also have “listing auctions,” where we create a basic succinct list of the items being sold. This is a great reference for your bidding and allows you to see the layout of the auction. You can also download and print a copy of the catalog online at AuctionFlex (external link) before you come in.
- Take Notes: If you are new to auctions, it’s a good idea to take some notes and know what you plan to bid on ahead of time. Our auctioneers move very fast and sell 80-100 lots an hour. Be prepared and know how much you would like to spend ahead of time.
- Get a good seat: On the day of the auction make sure you have a good seat where the auctioneer can see you bidding. You can reserve your seat ahead of time when you come in to preview the auction.
- Invite your friends: An auction is a great way to spend the afternoon with friends! Harlowe-Powell has a number of loyal regular customers who come with their friends and family.
- Enjoy a bite to eat: We have a number of different catering groups that come in and provide an array of food for you to purchase and enjoy. The proceeds are donated to various groups like the SPCA.
- If you have to leave during the auction and want to keep bidding: Leave an absentee bid. Before you leave, check in with the reception desk and the staff can help you set up an absentee bid form. Learn more about Absentee Bidding.
- Check Out: You can leave the auction at any time. Once you have bid on your items, return to the reception desk and you can pay for your items. We take cash, check, Visa and Mastercard. You must pay for your items before you pick them up.
- Pick up: Please try to take all of your purchases with you on the day of the sale or within 24 hours. The Harlowe-Powell staff will help you load. Please click here to see more on Pick Up.
- Come Back! We are constantly getting new items in all different categories. There is always something to be found and discovered at auction! Check our Auction Calendar for upcoming auctions.
