New to Auctions

Here are some suggestions for those just learning about auctions:

  1. Register for a bidder number: You must have a bidder number to bid and you can get a number at the reception desk. Bidder numbers are issued only on the day of the auction. There is no fee for registering, but know that we charge a 15% buyer's premium on top of the hammer price.
  2. Preview our auction: Take a walk through our auction house during preview times and get familiar with the items in the auction. This is a great opportunity to gather more information on the items you’ll be bidding on.
  3. Study the catalog: Our catalogs provide in-depth descriptions and pictures for all the items in the auction. All of our catalogs are also available online. In the catalog you can expect to see information such as auction estimates, any noticeable damage, dimensions, and any found research or provenance. We have listing sheets for our bi-weekly auctions that provide a basic succinct list of the items being sold.
  4. Take notes: If you are new to auctions, it’s a good idea to take some notes and know which items you plan to bid on. Our auctioneers sell 80-100 lots an hour. Be prepared and know how much you would like to spend ahead of time.
  5. Get a good seat: On the day of the auction make sure you have a good seat where the auctioneer can see you bidding. You can reserve your seat ahead of time when you come in to preview the auction.
  6. Invite your friends: An auction is a great way to spend time with friends! Harlowe-Powell has a number of loyal regular customers who come with their friends and family.
  7. Food: We provide breakfast, lunch and snack items at all of our auctions.
  8. If you have to leave during the auction and want to keep bidding: Leave an absentee bid. Before you leave, drop off a completed absentee bid form at the reception desk. Learn more about Absentee Bidding.
  9. Check Out: You can leave the auction at any time. Once you have bid on your items, return to the reception desk and you can pay for your items. We take cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and PayPal. You must pay for your items before you pick them up.
  10. Pick up: Please try to take all of your purchases with you on the day of the sale. The Harlowe-Powell staff will help you load. Please click here to see more on Pick Up.
  11. Come Back! We are constantly getting new items in all different categories. There is always something to be found and discovered at auction!
